WHALE
SONG: THE FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD
On
August 16th I was the guest artist on a
KSBR whale watching cruise. I don't tend
to take my full PA system with me as space
is limited on the boat and the weather is
unpredictable. However I do try to take
some unusual flutes with me. For this
cruise I decided to take the biggest,
lowest pitched flute I own, a Pat Haran
bass flute in D. My "whale" flute. I knew
that by over-blowing in just the right way
I could mimic the sound of whales and play
some extra low notes to conjure up visions
of these magnificent creatures, if not the
real thing.
Sure
enough, right after I finished my
improvisation on board the boat with this
flute a Blue whale made it's presence
known by surfacing nearby. It was a
magical experience!

Blue
Whales are the largest animal known to
have ever existed on earth and this one
was no exception. As it was feeding it
would surface to breath, exhaling a spout
of water vapor high into the air with a
loud whooshing sound. Then slowly it would
roll back under water, sometime showing
it's dorsal fin.
The
ship that day was also accompanied by pods
of dolphins. They swam along side the
boat, surfed in it's wake, and leapt high
in the air as if to show off. Most likely
they were just feeding, but it was a fun
counterpoint to the slow moving
whale.

Later
that same day I did an afternoon
performance where I played the song I had
improvised on the boat that morning. This
time I recorded and video taped the whale
song.

I
took the recording back to my studio and
edited together images from the concert
and of the dolphins and the whale. The end
